All of us can play this vital role [Foundations]

Published over 1 year ago • 2 min read

Hey Reader,

It's James from Nexus Labs with another note about our Foundations course...

Rachel Kennedy is a rising star in our industry. She's got the rare mix of the right mindset, the technical know-how, and the understanding of holistic strategy that the industry needs more of.

And since she's helped me create the Nexus Foundations course from day 1, we sat down to reflect on the first few cohorts and what we've learned so far from the many students that we've been lucky enough to meet.

You can find the full podcast episode here, but I wanted to share a few clips with you today that are relevant to your interest in taking the course. These will give you a peek behind the curtain and hopefully leave you better informed on whether to join us for Cohort 5 in September.

First, on the importance of the "smart building champion" role and how we can all play the role no matter where we sit in the industry. Check it out here (8 mins).

I love this snippet:

"So that's kind of what the course is all about, right? It's giving people that holistic viewpoint of how it all comes together. That's something we hear a lot from the students: you helped us figure out how it all comes together."

Next up, we then transitioned into our goals for the course and the amazing community of alumni that are coming together. Check it out here (9 mins).

That alumni network really has me excited...

"We're starting to see the alumni network really start to help each other. We just had someone this week post on the chatroom that they need help coming up with a job description for a smart building specialist. And she told me she had six or seven people reach out and (offer help). So those sorts of things are just beginning..."

Speaking of alumni, I love this quote from Mike, a smart building champion who works for McKinstry:

"Thanks for the great lay of the smart building land (long way to go, fragmented, no real killer apps) all of which makes it is an exciting time to be in this industry with immense amount of opportunity"

He's absolutely correct. This is one of the great insights I have loved hearing from our alumni. Since no one has this all figured out:

  • it's the perfect time to become a leader
  • it's the perfect time to meet others like you and learn from them
  • it's the perfect time to set up partnerships that compliment you

That "lay of the land" was exactly what we were going for when we created the course curriculum. We'll provide the map, it's your job to chart your path.

Next week on August 17th, I'll start sending you daily emails to make sure you're fully informed about Cohort 5, which will run for 6 weeks starting on 9/21/2022. I’ll share with you my very best advice on how to approaching growing your impact in the smart buildings industry, including:

  • Why this moment in our industry is such a unique, "unparalleled" opportunity
  • Why on-the-job training isn't enough for smart buildings leaders
  • The single biggest myth about smart buildings and the mistakes it causes
  • Which learning approaches to avoid and where I think everyone should start
  • My hard-learned method for building a Smart Building Strategy for any project or portfolio
  • Schedule, bonuses, and other details for the upcoming cohort

Until next week,

—James

If you've lost interest in the course, you can always unsubscribe here from Cohort 5 emails.

Hey friends, After a fun week in Scottsdale, Arizona at the Realcomm | IBcon conference, I'm feeling very energized! Here are three of my highlights from the conference: Meeting you—By my count, I met 25 of our 350 Nexus Pro members and many more podcast listeners. It was great to meet many of you for the first time face-to-face! The best: Thano—Of the educational sessions I attended, Thano Lambrinos' session on QuadReal's smart building strategy was hands down the best. He included costs and...

Hey friends, A few weeks back, we talked about avoiding carbon washing by using clear terminology. As we covered, the terms "carbon neutral" and "net zero" are sometimes murky, ambiguous, questionable, and misleading. I've continued to dig into this topic, and when it comes to using similar terms to describe our buildings, it gets even more confusing! Beyond carbon neutral and net zero, there are at least 25 more that are specifically for buildings. Examples include: Net Zero Carbon, Zero Net...

Hey friends, During each week of our 6-week Foundations course, we host a live workshop where we explore the key concepts of each of our six modules. Last week, we explored the business case for smart building technology. One of our breakout room discussions was focused on the ways that the business case is rapidly evolving. Can you guess how many ways the students came up with? Twenty. Crazy, right? If you're feeling like the industry is moving extra fast right now, you're not alone. Here's...
